This is a bit of a fundamental decision for the business. Both options are totally fine, it really depends on how your business wants to set up default rates.
The main question is… Do you set default rates based on roles, or do you set them on a person?
If you set default billable rates based on roles
Setting billable rates for roles is useful if you charge the same rates for all your engineers, senior consultants etc. If this works for your business, it is recommended that you use the Global Billable Rates option to set up your default rates.
Global billable rates allow you to set a rate for each role, and when any person linked to that role (on their posting) is added to a project, they will automatically be assigned the rate for their role. If you operate projects in multiple currencies you can even set the default rate for each role in each currency you operate,
It is also possible to create custom billable rate cards to be used on projects for certain companies. Custom billable rate cards can only be set per role - it isn’t an option to set up multiple “personal” rates.
If you set global billable rates, any rates set on a person’s posting will be ignored - the rate for their role is what is pulled into the project.
If you set default billable rates by person
In some instances a business prefers to set billable rates based on the individual people rather than by roles. A default billable rate can be set on a person’s posting, and when they are assigned to a project that is the rate that will be set for them.
Billable rates on a person’s posting will be ignored if there is a rate set for their role on global billable rates or custom billable rate cards.
